More climbing info/stats

Hey All,

Rev. J wanted to know how far the walk actually was (in non-metric units!), so we figured it out for you to see (Thanks, Jason!):

11-12 km as the crow flies = 8-ish miles

706 meters UP = 2300-ish feet

Check it out:

Lots of love!

revj: also impressed, not only with the climb, but also...there are crows in NZ? I thought this was paradise?

Dad, I was gonna say "As the Nazgul flies... and you better hope we don't have one of those on our tracks.", but I didn't know if you'd remember the reference from Return of the King (Gandalf said it to Pippin). No, no crows, but the expression is the same here. There ARE, however, crow sized black and white birds with funny heads that I got a too-far-away picture of. Also, forget paradise -- dude, there are seagulls even here. And possums, too. But rabbits are considered 'rodents' and are thought of basically the same as rats...so at least there's that. :)

I think the black and white birds would be magpies, but don't quote me on that. Do they make a pretty nast noise that sometimes sounds like a rusty gate?

Peong, it IS! Thank you! I'd forgotten the name. That's one odd-lookin' bird. Seriously.
